Welcome !!

The preparation for the SSI (Scuba Schools International)
scuba diving certification process consists of approximately eight weekly sessions. It includes both classroom and pool time. In the classroom the students get familiar with concepts, while in the pool, students learn to use the equipment and the necessary skills and diving techniques to be comfortable in the water and become safe, confident divers. The certification process concludes with a 2-day open water skills test conducted on local beaches. Students have to show mastery of the skills they previously learned in the pool.

After certification, an optional boat dive gives students the opportunity to explore and experience the wonders of the surrounding underwater world. Highly qualified diving instructors oversee the day-to-day operations. The ratio of staff to youth is one adult per two to three children in the water, thus ensuring both the physical and emotional safety of the kids.

But before all this can happen, some paperwork needs to be completed. The Student Enrollment Form will require your personal information, emergency contact and aquatic interests. Parents or legal guardians need to sign a consent to participate and a medical history form. If the participant has a positive response to any of the conditions listed on the medical form, he/she will need to go through a dive medical exam. The instructor will provide the participants a medical statement and guidelines for the physician. If you have questions or you need help to complete the paperwork, contact Laura Medrano at (617)350-6900 ext. 171 or email her.

After the completion of the scuba diving certification, participants will receive periodic
environmental education, including field trips, and will have the opportunity to be placed in environmental organizations, where they will work hand in hand with marine and

environmental educators, scientists, community leaders, and peers. They will learn about the decision making process on marine industrial activities, protection of the environment, commercial development on ports, and beach restoration and environmental justice for poor urban and rural areas where the most toxic materials are often dumped.

Some of you may be interested in becoming spokespeople for the next Dive Kulture group, and assist in the classroom, pool and open water activities, while you continue with your Advanced Open Water Certification and beyond. Marine Biology, Marine Science, Environmental studies, Commercial Diving or becoming a Dive Instructor are some careers that you may think in pursuing while being in the program or afterwards.

Don't get discouraged if you have a CORI and apply. We are here to assist you!
