Hello Dive Kulture friends!! We hope you enjoy our first newsletter - much of the progress we've made since we met at Sea Rovers has been thanks to your support. So THANK YOU, enjoy, and please send us your feedback and suggestions.
Funds raised at Boston Sea Rovers 2009 (BSR) will be entirely dedicated to preventing violence in Boston. We are exploring the idea of pursuing scuba certification with three apprentices of the Maritime Apprenticeship Program, a vocational training program on Boston Harbor that services youth referred by the Department of Youth Services . "Red tape" issues are being addressed; ultimately, we are not only looking at scuba as a recreational pursuit, but as a gateway into commercial diving as a vocational track, even if for just one of these young men; we will keep you posted as the story unfolds.
NEWS:
1. Planning two scuba group classes this Summer:
The Adolescent Network For Today, a Latin-American Health Institute (LHI) program supporting chronically ill youth, is sponsoring five of their participants.
2. Looking for paid placement opportunities for our 2008 graduates
Please let us know if you have any suggestions for part-time summer jobs. We are currently applying to the NE Aquarium, Save the Harbor / Save the Bay (SHSB), Boys and Girls Clubs, Chelsea Collaborative, Summer of Opportunity Program, and the South End Technology Center.
3. Involving the entire community:
On April 18, SHSB sponsored a Marine Mammal Safari around the Boston Islands; our 2008 graduates and members of their communities were invited - see picture.
4. Received great support from the diving community that we met at BSR:
We attended United Divers of Central Mass club meeting in March and received a $1,000 donation from members, offers for used gear, and invitations to bring our SEALs and scuba dive with the club on June 7 and to attend "Chick's Day" on July 12, with event proceedings being donated to Dive Kulture.
Jerry Shine donated some of his beautiful underwater pictures and copies of his book " A Shore Diving Guide to New England" .
United Divers of New Hampshire contacted us to attend one of their club meetings.
We are currently scheduling a presentation to the Bay State Council of Divers.
5. Obtained storage space for donated gear from United Divers in Somerville
If you have something to donate, please contact us and we'll pick it up. We'd like to thank Boston Harbor Diving for donating the first pieces of equipment.
Desired items include:
6. Submitted four grant proposals to private foundations and the State of Massachusetts
Responses expected by end of June.
To help Dive Kulture be sustainable, please donate through our website . If you make a credit card donation, PLEASE make sure you indicate in the form that your donation is for Dive Kulture by checking the appropriate box.
Special thanks to LHI for sponsoring the program!!!
